Veteran Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar, fondly known as Bharat Kumar for his unforgettable roles in patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai, leaving behind a cinematic legacy that defined an era of Indian storytelling rooted in national pride. Mr. Kumar was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital, where he died at 3:30 am on Friday due to heart-related complications.
According to the medical certificate issued by the hospital, the secondary cause of death was decompensated liver cirrhosis. His passing has left the Indian film industry and millions of fans heartbroken, as they remember the man whose films were more than just entertainment—they were deeply emotional tributes to India and its values. From his powerful performance in Upkar to his socially charged narrative in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Manoj Kumar used cinema as a tool for awareness, patriotism, and change.
Over the years, he became the face of nationalist cinema and was rightfully honored with prestigious awards like the Padma Shri and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Akshay Kumar saying he learned the meaning of patriotism through Manoj Kumar’s films, while filmmaker Karan Johar recalled being mesmerized by Kranti as a child. Co-star Aruna Irani shared that the actor had been struggling with recurring respiratory issues in recent months but never lost his warmth or love for cinema. His funeral, set to be held in Mumbai with full state honors, will mark the end of a golden chapter in Indian cinema.
Manoj Kumar was not just an actor—he was a movement, a storyteller of India’s soul. As the country bids farewell to one of its most revered cinematic patriots, his legacy will live on through every reel that still echoes his unwavering love for the nation.
