Sunny Deol’s newly released action-packed film Jaat opened in theatres across India this Thursday, but its Day 1 box office collection failed to meet sky-high expectations. According to several reports, the film earned ₹9.50 crore on its opening day—marking a modest start for what was positioned as another major mass entertainer from the iconic actor. While the figure is respectable in isolation, it pales in comparison to the blockbuster debut of Gadar 2, which had stormed theatres with a ₹40 crore opening in 2023.
As per early box office tracking data from Sacnilk.com, Jaat witnessed an overall 12.89% occupancy for Hindi shows, with relatively stronger performance in urban centres like Jaipur and Chennai. However, nationwide response has remained underwhelming so far. In fact, when compared to Salman Khan’s recent release Sikandar, which opened at ₹26 crore despite being panned by critics, Jaat has underperformed significantly.
The film is directed by Gopichand Malineni and jointly produced by People Media Factory and Mythri Movie Makers. Alongside Sunny Deol, the movie stars Saiyami Kher, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh in pivotal roles. The story, layered with action and emotional depth, was expected to strike a chord with audiences, but early reviews suggest a lack of novelty in the plot and an uneven pace, which might have contributed to its slow start.
Speaking at a recent promotional event, both Randeep Hooda and Vineet Kumar Singh emphasized that audience connection is the true benchmark of success. “Critics are important, but it’s the viewers’ hearts we want to win,” said Vineet. The cast and makers are hopeful that positive word-of-mouth will help the film grow over the weekend and pull in more viewers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities—an area where Sunny Deol’s popularity still commands massive footfall.
Film analysts believe that multiple factors may have impacted Jaat’s performance. A less aggressive promotional campaign, stiff competition from previous releases, and a fatigued audience segment may have dampened the excitement. Unlike Gadar 2, which had strong emotional and nostalgic value backed by an aggressive marketing blitz, Jaat entered cinemas with relatively lower buzz.
Despite the slow start, industry experts aren’t ready to call it a miss just yet. The weekend collection will play a critical role in determining whether Jaat can gain momentum. Films with rural appeal and massy elements often see a gradual rise if they resonate with the core audience. Trade expert Ramesh Bala stated, “The real test lies in the film’s weekend trend. If it holds well and sees a jump, it can still emerge successful.”
To summarize, Jaat is off to a lukewarm start at the box office. While it doesn’t replicate the opening glory of Gadar 2 or even Sikandar, it still has a fighting chance. The next two days will be crucial in defining the film’s commercial trajectory.
