In a move that’s set to affect millions of kitchens across the country, the Indian government has increased the price of domestic LPG gas cylinders by ₹50, effective April 8, 2025. The hike impacts both regular consumers and those enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme, prompting widespread discussions around inflation, fuel affordability, and household budgeting.
With this revision, Ujjwala beneficiaries will now pay ₹550 per cylinder, up from ₹500, while non-Ujjwala consumers will be charged ₹853, instead of the previous ₹803. The price increase was officially confirmed by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who addressed media on Monday.
The Minister explained that the LPG price hike is aimed at recovering a massive ₹43,000 crore loss incurred by oil marketing companies. He also stated that the government will regularly review LPG prices every 15 to 30 days, based on fuel trends and market conditions.
The price adjustment follows closely on the heels of another development — the excise duty on petrol and diesel has also been increased by ₹2 per litre. As per the latest notification from the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, the excise on petrol is now ₹13 per litre, and for diesel, it is ₹10 per litre.
This double blow has sparked concern among middle-class families and daily wage earners who already face rising food and utility costs. Experts believe the fuel and LPG price hikes will likely lead to a domino effect, increasing the cost of transportation, groceries, restaurant meals, and other essentials.
If you’re planning to refill your cylinder this week, here’s a quick recap of the updated LPG rates:
- PMUY Beneficiaries: ₹550 per cylinder
- General Consumers: ₹853 per cylinder
This increase may also indirectly impact restaurant pricing, school tiffin services, and local caterers, who rely heavily on domestic LPG cylinders. Many are already passing on the rising fuel costs to customers.
